Kevin Sullivan has over two decades of experience on Capitol Hill and the Executive branch. Kevin started his government service working for the leadership of VISTA and the Peace Corps. He spent 14 years on Capitol Hill and eight years as a Senior Adviser and Speechwriter to the U.S. Secretary of Education Richard Riley in the Clinton Administration. Along the way Kevin staffed out three national presidential campaigns,
Kevin may be best known for writing Cong. Barbara Jordan's speech at the 1976 Democratic Convention. During the course of his career on Capitol Hill worked for three House members, two Senators including the Senate Majority Leader as a member of the Senate Democratic Policy Committee. Kevin was a member of a Cabinet vetting team during the Clinton Administration transition in 1993. Kevin has worked for a variety of non-profits and foundations over the years on a wide range of issues from teacher quality, environmental literacy, school design, the impact of aging Baby Boomers on the future of cities, the role of religious organizations in the national health insurance debate and peace in Northern Ireland. Advancing Education Kevin worked for 8 years for U.S. Secretary of Education Richard Riley and was the chief architect in the launch of the Secretary's "Annual State of Education Address," his annual "Back to School" bus trips and was part of the strategic team that developed the E-rate. Kevin was the chief architect behind the effort by Secretary Riley and President Clinton to create a new national consensus on school prayer and religion in public schools in 1995.. httphttp://www.thewordout.net/pages/page.asp?page_id=59889 Kevin wrote the initial concept memo in 2000 proposing the creation of International Education Week which continues to be an annual event hosted by the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of State, http://eca.state.gov/programs-initiatives/international-education-week A series of national reports on the Baby Boom Echo which Kevin started in 1995 alerted the nation to record breaking enrollment in our nation's public schools an effort by the Clinton Administration secure new federal funding for school modernization http://www.kidsource.com/kidsource/content/baby.boom.echo.1.html. Kevin would go on to organize the first National Summit on School Design and co-authored of a report entitled "Schools as Centers of Community: A Citizen's Guide for Planning and Designhttp://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/ED539486.pdf. In 2005 Over the course of the following decade Kevin was a member of a team that went on to organize four National Summits on School Design for the American Architectural Foundation. In 2017 Kevin helped to organize BASIC, a non-partisan civic coalition, that seeks to secure federal funds to design and modernize the next generation of school facilities https://www.buildusschools.org. Political Expertise Over the years, Kevin would work for a series of progressive Democratic reformers and was one of the leaders of the 1975 Democratic National Issues Convention leading to a position as Congresswoman' Barbara Jordan's speechwriter and then a two year stint in the Carter Administration as a speechwriter. Kevin became the National Field Director for Gary Hart's Presidential Campaign in 1983-84, wrote speeches for the presidential campaign of Mike Dukakis in 1988 and went on to work for 3 years for the U.S. Senate Democratic Policy Committee before joining the Clinton Administration. He was a speechwriter at the 1988 Democratic Convention Non-Profit Leadership For nine years Kevin served the Chair of the Washington Ireland Program (WIP), a leadership programs for future young leaders on the island of Ireland. He currently serves as an advisor to New Story Leadership https://www.newstoryleadership.org Kevin is one of three co-founders of http://www.VotinRights.ie that seeks to secure voting rights for Irish emigrants and citizens living in Northern Ireland. He is also the current project director of the the Ad Hoc Committee to Protect the Good Friday Agreement, a group of over 40 Irish American leaders dedicating to protecting the gains made by the Good Friday Agreement during the current Brexit negotiations. . At the community level Kevin organizes an annual 4th of July parade, a Halloween street festival and the annual Jingle Bells Charity Dog Walk that raises several thousand dollars annually for local charities every December, He lives in Bethesda, Maryland with his wife and three daughters. |
